How Should Low-Volume, High-Mix EMS Factories Select Their SMT Equipment?
Orders are getting smaller. Precision requirements are getting higher. This is the new normal for more and more EMS factories.
A low-volume, high-mix production model demands a completely different set of selection criteria than traditional high-volume lines. Four things matter most.
1. Changeover speed. Low volume means frequent model changes. If a changeover takes half an hour, it eats your margin. Look for rapid changeover mechanisms, automatic program recall, and quick feeder exchange—capable of compressing changeover time to minutes.
2. Precision margin. High precision is not about impressive spec sheets—it is about achieving stable, repeatable results over the long run. To place micro components such as 0201 and 01005, every stage—printing, placement, reflow—needs sufficient precision headroom. Do not just compare peak accuracy; evaluate process capability in volume production and how well the equipment adapts to incoming material and environmental variation.
3. Supporting systems and integration. The bottleneck on a high-precision line is often not the standalone machine, but the transfer, buffering, and material supply between processes. Frequent board handling brings hidden losses: scratches, contamination, waiting time. Plasma cleaning, buffer conveyors, and intelligent storage are exactly what determine whether a line can run stably and continuously.
4. Data connectivity. Low volume and high mix make mis-feeding, missing components, and broken traceability the biggest risks. Plan MES integration before selection: can material error-proofing, reflow profiles, and quality data be collected in real time and traced by batch?
